Autism 101
Taught by Dr. Sonya Doherty, ND An introduction to the biomedical approach to treating patients with Autism Spectrum Disorder
Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD) consists of neurological symptoms but also physiological symptoms that cause discomfort and pain. These symptoms are medical and medical symptoms should be assessed and treated. Some physiological symptoms appear neurological. One example of a neurological symptom is head banging. There are those on the Autism Spectrum who have reported severe head pain that is so painful that the head banging gives an altered pain sensation. Biomedical aspects of autism include the dysfunction in the digestive system with altered flora, imbalance in neurotransmitters, and lowered levels of antioxidants.

Organic Acid Testing 101
The Organic Acids Test (OAT) is a comprehensive metabolic snapshot of a patient’s overall health. It measures 76 markers and gives an insight into concerns such as of intestinal yeast and bacteria. Abnormally high levels of these microorganisms can cause or worsen behavior disorders, hyperactivity, movement disorders, fatigue and immune function. Chronic illnesses, infections and neurological concerns will often present with abnormal organic acids in their urine.
You will learn how the test can assist in guiding treatment for patients with autism and infectious diseases. Focus is on understanding metabolites that can indicate:
-
yeast, fungal or bacterial markers
-
urinary oxalates
-
mitochondrial markers
-
neurotransmitter markers
-
methylation biomarkers
-
how to identify nutrient deficiencies and low glutathione
