Autism 101

Taught by Dr. Sonya Doherty, ND An introduction to the biomedical approach to treating patients with Autism Spectrum Disorder

Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD) consists of neurological symptoms but also physiological symptoms that cause discomfort and pain. These symptoms are medical and medical symptoms should be assessed and treated. Some physiological symptoms appear neurological. One example of a neurological symptom is head banging. There are those on the Autism Spectrum who have reported severe head pain that is so painful that the head banging gives an altered pain sensation. Biomedical aspects of autism include the dysfunction in the digestive system with altered flora, imbalance in neurotransmitters, and lowered levels of antioxidants.

Taught by Dr. Carissa Doherty and Dr. Danielle O’Connor, this course will teach you the most current research on how SNPs and Methylation impact your patients with chronic disease.  You will learn:

  • How methylation impairments occur in your patients

  • What is a SNP.  What are common SNPs that impact your patients and how do you treat them

  • How do SNPs impact your patients and chronic disease

  • How to test the function of the methylation pathway

Continuing Education Credits

This course provides 6 category A credits from CONO in Ontario

Course Curriculum

Lecture 1

Introduction to genomics and explaining MTHRF/MTR/MTRR. Learn the genes involved in the methylation pathway as well as nutritional work arounds to be able to educate patients on how to optimize their genetic potential.

Lecture 2

You will learn about glutathione and how various SNP’s can impact your body’s ability to make glutathione. Genes such as CBS, GAD, SAM/SAH and BHMT will be discussed with nutritional work arounds.

Lecture 3

This section focuses on cholesterol and the impact for hormonal regulation focusing on SNPs including PEMT, IDO, COMT and MAO. This will aid practitioners making decisions on how educate patients on cholesterol regulation and for hormonal balance.

Lecture 4

Krebs, SOD, SUOX and FUT2. You will learn the impact of these SNP’s in being able to optimize your patients ability to deal with free radicals to assist in prevention of chronic disease as well as optimizing gut health.

Organic Acid Testing 101

The Organic Acids Test (OAT) is a comprehensive metabolic snapshot of a patient’s overall health. It measures 76 markers and gives an insight into concerns such as of intestinal yeast and bacteria.  Abnormally high levels of these microorganisms can cause or worsen behavior disorders, hyperactivity, movement disorders, fatigue and immune function. Chronic illnesses, infections and neurological concerns will often present with abnormal organic acids in their urine.

You will learn how the test can assist in guiding treatment for patients with autism and infectious diseases. Focus is on understanding metabolites that can indicate:

  • yeast, fungal or bacterial markers

  • urinary oxalates

  • mitochondrial markers

  • neurotransmitter markers

  • methylation biomarkers

  • how to identify nutrient deficiencies and low glutathione
